To open a Kontist account, you’ll need to fulfill the following criteria:

1. Reside in Germany with official registration (Anmeldung).
2. File your taxes in Germany.
3. Have a valid ID to complete the verification process.
4. Be at least 18 years of age.

Kontist is available for a variety of self-employment forms:

1. Freelancers (Freiberufler) 
2. Small business owners (Kleinunternehmer)
3. SMEs (GmbHs, UGs and GbR)
4. Companies in founding

Generally speaking, if you have permission to be self-employed in Germany, you can join Kontist.

We don’t offer free trials because we offer a free business account. If you want to try Kontist without risk or obligation, you can sign up for a Kontist Free plan and use it for as long as you like before you decide.

Yes, there’s no minimum contract period and you can cancel or change your plan at any time. The cancellation or change will take effect at the beginning of the next billing cycle

If you change your plan, you’ll still have access to all your data (such as invoices and receipts). If you cancel your plan completely, you can download the data beforehand so you’ll have it for tax purposes later.

No, you don’t need to provide a tax number in order to sign up for Kontist, which means that even if you’re in the process of starting your freelancing career or founding a business, you can still open your Kontist business account now.

You’re charged automatically at the end of the month for the previous month’s usage and the upcoming month’s subscription. The fee will be deducted directly from your Kontist account and that you will be charged at the beginning of the month for the previous month.

If your account incurred any fees beyond the basic price, such as additional transactions or withdrawals in foreign currency, these will be listed with full transparency in your monthly receipt.

Absolutely. As long as you use your Kontist account solely for business purposes, both the basic price and any incurred fees are tax-deductible. The receipts you receive from Kontist can be used to verify the costs for tax purposes, if necessary.
